1942 and the Final Solution - A Course for Educators
June 25-27, 2012
8:30-4:30
Optional fourth day for Echoes and Reflections Training June 28th
Conference Room C - Jewish Community Campus
5801 West 115th Street
Overland Park, Kansas
2012 marks the 70th anniversary of the implementation of the Final Solution. After the establishment of the death camp system in 1941 the full-scale destruction of the European Jewish community commenced in 1942. By summer, the large Polish ghettos were being liquidated and the Operation Reinhard camps (Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka), which were designated for the murder of that community, were operating at full capacity.
This course explores the path and process of the Final Solution, offers in-depth analysis of the death camp system with a special emphasis on the Operation Reinhard Camps, and considers the impact of a short 11 month time-frame from mid-1942 through mid-1943 that saw the destruction of Polish Jewry and the beginning of industrialized killing at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Analysis of primary source documents including survivor testimony, exposure to ready-made lesson plans, and practice with these resources will equip teachers with tools to engage their students in meaningful learning about the Final Solution.
An optional fourth day of training and 4 hours of individually scheduled independent study, centered around the curriculum
Echoes and Reflections, will provide participants with a complete testimony-based curriculum (valued at $100) and the option of earning an additional hour of graduate credit. Sessions will feature hands-on work with lesson plans appropriate for 7-12th grade classrooms. All sessions will be led by the MCHE staff.
Lunch will be served on site Monday and Tuesday. All course materials will be provided as well as snacks and drinks each day.
